Museum's Archives

The Archives Department of the Montreal Museum of Fine
Arts was established in 1991. Its activities are as follows:

1. Registration

As a repository for official Museum records, the Archives
Department is responsible for registering all the works
of art that come to the Museum for various reasons: as
possible acquisitions, for temporary exhibitions, as loans
to the permanent collection, and for study. The Archives
Department also registers and co-ordinates the loan of
works from the Museum's collection to other institutions,
both in Canada and abroad.

2. Computerized Documentation

The Archives Department manages the database on
works in the permanent collection. In addition to giving
researchers ready access to information and images,
the database permits information input to other public
databases to share knowledge on a larger scale. Infor-
mation on the works of art in the Museum’s collection
is available on the following databases: www.smq.qc.ca
and www.pro.rcip-chin.gc.ca

3. Archives

The Archives Department is primarily responsible for
establishing, preserving and maintaining records on
the permanent collection. A file of documents is created
for each work held by the Museum. It contains the result
of curatorial research, a reproduction of the work, related
publications, as well as administrative and other pertinent
information. The department also processes, describes,
preserves and makes available to researchers the Museum’s
historical archives and manages the Museum's administrative
documents. The department maintains a series of private
archives related to the history of the Museum and its collection.
Thanks to a grant from the Government of Canada through
Library and Archives Canada’s National Archival Development
Program, descriptions of the Museum’s exhibition archives
are available on the site of the Réseau de diffusion des
archives du Québec at the following address:
www.rdaq.qc.ca
