FRAGMENTATION
The International Biennial of Digital Art invites Robert Lepage,
Sarah Kenderdine and Jeffrey Shaw to the Museum

As part of the first edition of the International Biennial of Digital Art (BIAN), the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts will present, for the first time in North America, FRAGMENTATION, an adaptation of three scenes taken from the show LIPSYNCH directed by Robert Lepage for the ReACTOR 3D projection system designed by Sarah Kenderdine and Jeffrey Shaw.

At each simultaneous screening of footage from FRAGMENTATION filmed from the epic play LIPSYNCH, spectators invariably believe that the images were designed for the ReACTOR system. In fact, this sequence, taken from the “Thomas” chapter – eleven minutes depicting the alcoholism of a neurosurgeon, a vocal performance in a jazz club and an alcohol-fuelled breakdown – was written well before Lepage had heard of the ReACTOR system. Nonetheless, it seemed so tailor-made for it that the adaptation was quickly and easily accomplished. FRAGMENTATION was filmed in the afternoon before each performance at the Théâtre Denise-Pelletier in February-March 2010. Eleven minutes were made into a loop after minor adaptation by Lepage.
