World CulturesCOLLECTION NOT OPEN TO PUBLIC UNTIL JANUARY, 2012 (More details) The Museum’s collection of antiquities consists of terra cotta figures, relief fragments, sculptures, bronzes, earthenware vases and pottery, as well as a small but significant collection of Coptic textiles. The selection of Islamic art includes ceramics, glass, metalwork (including a 13th-century bowl inlaid with silver) and textiles. Generous donors have added extensively to our collection of Asiatic art from China, Korea, Japan and India, which boasts textiles, jades, lacquers, ceramics, bronzes and Buddhist sculptures. Art from Africa and Oceania includes figures, masks, textiles and functional objects, notably a superb Bini brass head from Nigeria and a Kuba mask from Zaïre. The Pre-Columbian collection covers the three main cultural areas of Central and South America and numbers over 625 pieces, among which are a rare tapestry panel from Peru and a ceramic dog from a Colima tomb. |
